Guimarães mayor sets 2030 climate-neutrality path as European Green Capital

Topicsclimate action governance

Guimarães holds the title of European Green Capital in 2026, and its mayor, Ricardo Araújo, says the aim is to turn it into lasting projects rather than a year of events. Targets include an all-electric bus network, possibly free for residents by year-end, and about 20 km of eco-paths. The council also plans river restoration, a new D. Afonso I garden and work with industry through a climate pact of over 140 bodies. Around four million euros of municipal spending is tied to the title, plus a 600,000-euro European Commission prize. The council wants to be judged on a verifiable path to climate neutrality by 2030, with emissions cut by 80%.
