Hundreds protest in Setúbal against bid to privatise Arrábida beaches

Hundreds of people joined a flashmob-style protest in Setúbal's Praça do Bocage, organised by the movement Deslarguem a Arrábida!, against attempts by the Herdade da Comenda's owner to have five beaches and surrounding land declared private property. Court cases are underway seeking exclusive ownership of the area, though the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Portuguese Environment Agency oppose the claim. Organisers said the protest, the fourth of its kind, aims to raise public awareness and criticised the municipal council's silence. A further demonstration is planned for 3 October at Praia da Galé, organised by the coastal-rights platform TAMLA.
