ICNF repairs storm-damaged forest tracks in Barreiro to prevent fires

The Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) is finishing repairs to forest tracks in the Mata Nacional da Machada, Barreiro, damaged by this year's storms and heavy rain in January and February. The work, done with the Barreiro council, forest firefighters and the National Forest Agents Corps, aims to restore access to priority routes needed for fire prevention and forest management before the hot season. ICNF official Nuno Sequeira said deep gullies had made several paths impassable. A related clearing operation is also under way nearby with the Portuguese Navy at the Fuzileiros school.
