IFAP head highlights funding and generational renewal challenges in Algarve farming

At a seminar in Lagoa organised by CCDR Algarve, IFAP chairman Luís Souto Barreiros presented figures on EU support for agriculture in the Algarve and urged early preparation for the next European funding cycle starting in 2028. He cited about 5,350 beneficiaries under the 2025 Single Application, roughly 27.5 million euros paid, and around 1,650 PDR2020 projects between 2014 and 2022 worth some 71 million euros in public spending. He also noted young farmers make up only 6.2% of Algarve beneficiaries, below the 6.8% national average, underlining generational renewal as a key challenge alongside water management and competitiveness.
