Mirandela to build five climate shelters against extreme heat

The municipality of Mirandela, in Bragança district, is to create five climate shelters equipped with vegetation, drinking fountains, rest areas and climate control, after becoming the first council in Terras de Trás-os-Montes to join the national Climate Shelters Network. The sites chosen are the Estação das Artes, the Ecoteca de Mirandela, Parque da Ribeira de Carvalhais, Parque do Império and the pine woods near Escola Secundária Luciano Cordeiro. The project responds to summer temperatures nearing 50ºC, and two of the venues will also offer heating in winter. Mayor Vítor Correia said the funding application should reach the maximum €75,000, 80% reimbursable, with the shelters expected ready by next summer.
