New association urges faster biomethane integration into gas grid

ATMAS – Associação para os Gases Renováveis, a newly created body representing gas distribution operators, is calling for faster integration of biomethane into Portugal's gas network. Its executive director, Gonçalo Salazar Leite, argues the existing grid can already receive biomethane without changes and could eventually replace 60% of natural gas in the system, at a third of the cost of full electrification. He frames biomethane as complementary to electricity, prioritising energy-intensive industries like ceramics and glass while also serving households. The association, with 10 members and growing, wants faster legislation to meet the 2030 target of 2.7 TWh.
