Portalegre Polytechnic launches soil regeneration and digital farming project for the Alentejo

Topicscrop rotation

The Polytechnic University of Portalegre is running coverPLUS, a project to regenerate soils and modernise farming in the Alentejo, coordinated by Professor Luís Alcino da Conceição and lasting until August 2028. It combines cover crops and organic fertilisation to raise soil organic matter, improve structure and help crops cope with climate change through better water and nutrient retention. A 3D digital-twin model will forecast production and support soil monitoring and forage decisions. Farmers will also receive digital training and technical support. The project has eligible investment of €49,025.70, 85% of it funded by the European Regional Development Fund through ALT2030.
