Portugal-Morocco undersea power cable hinges on private or EU funds

Portugal's Environment and Energy Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho said a proposed undersea electricity cable linking Portugal and Morocco remains under discussion with her Moroccan counterpart and will only proceed with private investment or EU support. Speaking in Castro Verde, she said the project, estimated some years ago at around one billion euros, would offer Portugal an alternative in case of a repeat of last April's blackout, when the country had to restart its grid alone despite the Iberian electricity market. She noted calculations are still ongoing and no final decision has been made.
