Portugal's aviation fuel use jumps 19% since 2019, ZERO warns

Environmental group ZERO reports that Portugal's jet fuel consumption rose 18.9% between 2019 and 2025, from 1.60 to 1.90 million tonnes, adding roughly one million tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. This contrasts with road fuel emissions, up just 3.6%, and electricity production emissions, down around 70%. Portugal still lacks a carbon budget for aviation and has not finished its aviation decarbonisation roadmap, RONDA. ZERO warns that planned airport expansions in Lisbon and Porto pose climate, health and social risks, and calls for emission trajectories to 2040 and measures to curb air traffic growth.
