ZERO – Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável

ZERO – Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável is a Portuguese non-profit environmental organisation founded at the end of 2015 by around a hundred people committed to achieving sustainable development in Portugal. Born from a split with Quercus, ZERO's mission is to intervene proactively in Portuguese society in defence of sustainability, based on the belief that only a balance between environment, society and economy can build a more cohesive world that respects the planet's natural limits. The organisation pursues five core ambitions summarised in its own words: zero fossil fuels, zero pollution, zero waste of resources, zero destruction of ecosystems and biodiversity, and zero social and economic inequality. ZERO's activities include public campaigns, policy advocacy, participation in public consultations, publication of reports and studies, awareness actions, and initiatives with businesses through corporate sustainability and volunteering programmes. The association also monitors specific environmental issues in Portugal, such as the impact of noise pollution from Lisbon's Humberto Delgado Airport on the health and economy of surrounding municipalities. With a headquarters in Lisbon and an active online presence, ZERO engages thousands of followers across social media and works with partner organisations, including international NGOs, to amplify its impact. Through its podcasts, blog, news coverage, petitions and events, ZERO informs and mobilises the public around pressing environmental and sustainability topics, positioning itself as one of Portugal's key voices for systemic environmental change.
