Portugal's greenhouse gas emissions fall to lowest level on record as economy grows
Portugal's greenhouse gas emissions fell 2.8% in 2024 to 52.0 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, the lowest figure since records began in 1995, while GDP grew 2.7%, according to national statistics office INE. It is the fourth year running that emissions have dropped alongside growth. A 14.9% fall in the energy sector meant industry, at 24.5%, became the biggest emitter. Emissions are 26% below 2015 levels, though transport, information and communication, and agriculture rose over that period. The carbon intensity of the economy fell 5.4% to 0.21 kg of CO2 equivalent per euro of GDP.
