Galp refinery again tops Portugal's polluter ranking for 2025

ZERO analysed European Commission data from the EU Emissions Trading System to rank Portugal's top ten carbon dioxide emitters for 2025, covering industrial plants and airlines. The Galp refinery remains the leading emitter, but gas-fired power plants such as Lares, Ribatejo and Pego increased emissions, while Sines refinery and some cement plants saw notable reductions. Overall, the top ten's combined emissions rose 7% compared with 2024. ZERO urges industry to plan a fair transition away from fossil fuels, involving workers and suppliers, as it tracks the scheme under the EU-funded LIFE EFFECT project.
