Portugal used up 2025's natural resources by 7 May

Smart Waste Portugal marked Earth Overshoot Day, 30 July globally, by calling for faster adoption of circular economy practices. The association notes Portugal reached its own overshoot date on 7 May, meaning the country would exhaust a year's resources in just over four months if the whole world consumed like the Portuguese. Citing the Circularity Gap Report 2026, it says linear economic practices cost the global economy roughly €25.4 trillion annually, about 31% of world GDP. The group argues change must start at product design and consumption habits, not just end-of-line recycling.
