WWF restores 25 hectares of Nazaré forest after Storm Kristin with €100,000 from Lidl

Topicsecosystem restorationpost-disturbance recovery

WWF Portugal is restoring 25 hectares of the Valado national forest in the Nazaré municipality, where Storm Kristin brought down many trees in January. The €100,000 project, funded by the Lidl supermarket chain at its own suggestion, began in May and runs until May next year. Work includes clearing fallen timber, repairing visitor trails on São Bartolomeu hill, removing invasive acacia and chorão, and planting native species such as maritime pine, strawberry tree and kermes oak. It forms part of WWF's D-Evolução initiative, which also backs projects in Peneda-Gerês, the Caldeirão hills and the Tagus estuary, with another planned for Montejunto.
