ZERO urges mechanical-biological waste treatment, opposes incineration in Algarve

Environmental association ZERO has called for strengthened mechanical and biological treatment of urban waste in the Algarve, to stop biodegradable matter reaching landfill untreated. It wants domestic waste separated from that produced by economic activities, a measure it says is not being properly applied. ZERO proposes expanding Algar's two existing treatment units rather than building new facilities or investing in incineration. It also criticises Algar's waste action plan for leaving some 70,000 tonnes untreated, noting that a regional environmental authority's assessment of a new landfill cell in Loulé warns that depositing unstabilised organic waste is illegal.
