ZERO urges Portugal to oppose Almaraz nuclear plant extension

Environmental group ZERO is calling on the Portuguese government to publicly oppose Spain's decision to extend operations at the Almaraz nuclear plant near Cáceres until June 2030. The plant's two units, dating from 1981 and 1983, will run well beyond their originally planned 40-year lifespan and past the closure dates set in 2020. ZERO warns of cross-border risks given the plant's proximity to Portugal and its location on the Tagus basin, and criticises the lack of consultation with Portuguese authorities. It wants the government to formally protest to Spain, demand a binding closure timetable, raise the issue at the Portugal-Spain summit, and improve public access to safety and environmental monitoring information.
