Ecocentro Raiz4

Ecocentro Raiz4 is a research center located at Herdade do Espadanal, along the N233 near Castelo Branco, Portugal, founded by Ricky. Its mission is to preserve and study nature, clean energy, and all ecologically viable methods, developing sustainability practices that avoid any negative ecological footprint. The center's work is organized around three pillars: permaculture, bioconstruction, and sustainability. In permaculture, Raiz4 follows the classic ethics of protecting the soil, caring for people, and sharing surpluses, focusing on regenerating soil and water as the foundations of life. In bioconstruction, the center applies ecological principles from design to occupation, using non-harmful and recycled local materials, rainwater storage, renewable energy, and passive lighting strategies, extending these ideas to furniture and living systems like green roofs. Its approach to sustainability integrates social, energy, economic and environmental dimensions, insisting that human enterprises must be ecologically correct, economically viable, socially fair, and culturally diverse. Raiz4 puts ancient and traditional knowledge into practice while developing and testing new ideas for ecological living. The project actively hosts volunteers, running recurring volunteering seasons where people can come stay, contribute labor and skills, and learn about permaculture and bioconstruction in a hands-on setting. The center also maintains an online shop and gallery, and shares educational content about its activities through social media. Overall, Raiz4 positions itself as a living laboratory for regenerative and low-impact ways of building, growing food, and organizing community life, aiming to demonstrate that a better relationship with the planet is both possible and practical.
