Ocean Azores Foundation
A nonprofit on São Miguel, founded by Ali Bullock, that works to protect the ocean around the Azores and its cetacean populations. It is closely linked to the Solar Branco Eco Estate and to a gin brand that gives €1 from every bottle sold to marine conservation.
Ocean Azores Foundation works to protect and promote the marine ecosystem of the Azores. Its focus is on safeguarding cetaceans and on raising awareness of why ocean conservation matters in the archipelago. The nonprofit is based on São Miguel and was founded by Ali Bullock. Its motto is "Nine islands, one ocean".
The foundation is closely tied to Ali Bullock's other ventures. One is the Solar Branco Eco Estate, a sustainability-focused property on São Miguel. Another is a gin brand associated with the Gin Library, reportedly the world's largest gin collection. For every bottle of gin sold, €1 goes to the foundation's marine conservation work.
Since it was founded, the foundation has argued for protecting the Azores as one of the most important marine regions in the world. It is working to combine conservation science with community engagement and eco-tourism. The team is small, and the organisation is grassroots and driven by its founder. It relies on partnerships with local businesses and eco-estates to fund and sustain its work, which spans ecosystem protection, sustainable tourism and social entrepreneurship in the ocean around all nine islands.
