Azores UNESCO Global Geopark

The Azores UNESCO Global Geopark is a designated territory covering approximately 12,884 km², including 2,324 km² of land across the nine islands of the Azores and 10,560 km² of surrounding marine area, home to four marine geosites. Recognised for its outstanding geodiversity, the Geopark features a network of 121 geosites that showcase the archipelago's volcanic origins, unique landscapes and ongoing geological processes shaped by its position on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Managed by the Azores Geopark Association, based in Horta, the Geopark works to protect this geological heritage while supporting scientific research, environmental education and sustainable tourism throughout the islands. Its activities include educational programmes aimed at raising awareness of the region's geology among residents and visitors, guided routes to geosites for schools and communities, and monitoring efforts related to geological risk, given the volcanic nature of the archipelago. The Geopark connects geological conservation with community wellbeing and regional development, encouraging responsible visitation to geosites and promoting the Azores as a leading example of geotourism in Portugal. It partners with local businesses and artisans on each island, such as traditional craft workshops, to strengthen cultural and geotouristic offerings, and collaborates with international bodies including UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network, as well as regional entities and research projects such as GREET GEO, which explores geothermal energy potential. Through partnerships with universities and research institutions, the Geopark also supports scientific study of the islands' unique volcanic features, contributing to a broader understanding of earth processes and their relationship with biodiversity and human settlement. As a UNESCO-designated site, it stands as both a scientific resource and an educational and touristic asset, helping to preserve the natural and cultural identity of the Azores for future generations.
