Terrapalha is a natural building architecture studio founded in 2008 by architect Catarina Pinto, based in Sintra and the Alentejo coast, specialising in ecological construction, rehabilitation and consultancy across Portugal and Europe.

Terrapalha is the studio of architect Catarina Pinto, dedicated since 2008 to ecological and healthy BioArchitecture aimed at improving quality of life. Based in Sintra and on the Alentejo coast, with projects across Portugal and Europe, the team develops construction and rehabilitation projects using abundant, natural and local resources such as earth, straw, wood, stone, hemp, bamboo and lime. Terrapalha offers a full range of architectural and engineering services, from initial studies and licensing to execution projects and site supervision, working with experienced partners who share ecological criteria. The studio also specialises in the rehabilitation of old buildings with an ecological approach, including restoration, reinforced thermal insulation, traditional renders and efficient window frames that preserve heritage while offering contemporary comfort. Straw bale construction is a core specialty, with the team representing EcoCocon prefabricated straw-insulated wall panels, which allow fast assembly and superior energy efficiency, potentially achieving Passivhaus certification. Terrapalha also provides ecological coatings and paints using clay, lime, natural pigments and Moroccan tadelakt finishes. Beyond building, the studio offers consultancy and training services, organising natural construction courses and talks for builders, architects, engineers, self-builders, owners and students. Natural materials are also explored as an artistic medium, promoting awareness of resource use and ecological construction. Terrapalha is recognised as a pioneering force in natural building in Portugal, combining traditional techniques with modern ecological design.
