Tree planting in Portugal

After a century of eucalyptus and pine monoculture and the fires that follow it, replanting in Portugal is mostly about species mix rather than volume. Native oak, chestnut, strawberry tree and alder go back in slowly; what they replace burned fast.

The Biggest Mini Forest movement plants dense community food forests, often on small urban and village plots. Reflorestar Portugal works on biodiverse reforestation at landscape scale.

This is the most direct way to help with a free weekend: planting days run through the winter, need no experience, and are usually announced a few weeks ahead. Check the project pages for who is planting near you, and our events calendar for dates. Related focuses: habitat restoration, rewilding and agroforestry.
