Portugal has more sun than almost anywhere in Europe and, for a long time, less rooftop solar than countries with half the light. That has changed quickly: self-consumption rules and renewable energy communities turned the panel from an off-grid curiosity into ordinary household infrastructure.
Coopérnico was the first citizen energy cooperative in the country and finances projects with its members' money. Cleanwatts builds and operates energy communities from Coimbra, and its 100 Aldeias programme takes them into villages. Comunidade CER organises the paperwork side, and Malogica Solar installs across the north.
Panels are the easy half; what you do at night is the other. See also battery storage, energy efficiency and off-grid systems. Dated activities from these projects are listed in our events calendar.
