Wind energy in Portugal
Portugal gets a large share of its electricity from wind, but almost none of it is owned by the people living under the turbines. The interesting question in this focus is therefore not technical; it is who holds the asset.
Coopérnico, the citizen energy cooperative, is the clearest answer listed here: members finance renewable projects and share the return. AREAM plans regional energy for Madeira, where wind and island grids meet awkwardly, and AltogaGreen works on small-scale ecological and educational installations from Lisbon.
Small wind rarely pays for itself on a single property in this country; the community-scale version is where it works. If you work on community-owned wind in Portugal, we would like to list it.
