Foraging and wild foods in Portugal
Wild food here is not a novelty; it is what the countryside ate between harvests. Chestnuts, medronho, carob, wild asparagus, mushrooms after the first autumn rain, greens that most gardens treat as weeds.
Monte da Vida works ninety hectares of forest farm in the south-west where wild harvest is part of the system. Over the Edge Farm does the same off-grid near Odemira, The Landscape Farm grows and gathers in the Ribatejo, and Oasis dos 3 Sobreiros teaches it from a permaculture garden near Santiago do Cacém.
Go with someone who knows the ground the first time, and check who owns it, most of the Portuguese interior is private even when it looks abandoned.
