Food sovereignty in Portugal
Food sovereignty is the question of who decides (what gets grown, at what price, on whose land) rather than simply where the food comes from. In a country where a handful of chains control most of the retail shelf, that question has teeth.
Fruta Feia built a co-op around produce the market rejects. Colmeia Cooperativa da Terra and Regenerativa organise buying and land collectively in the Alentejo. Terra Sintrópica works with a whole municipality around Mértola, and Azeitão Eco-consciente does the neighbourhood version near Setúbal.
