Al-Bio is an association of organic farmers and agroecology advocates in the Algarve, working to strengthen sustainable small and medium-scale farming, biodiversity, and healthy food systems. It organises technical training days, field visits, and network-building initiatives across the region.
Al-Bio – Associação Agroecológica do Algarve is a community of organic farmers and agroecology practitioners based in the Algarve region of Portugal. The association brings producers together to work collectively towards sustainable production, applying ecological and regenerative practices that reduce environmental impact and enhance biodiversity. Its mission spans from production to commercialisation, offering guidance, shared experience, and problem-solving support to its network of associated producers.
Among its flagship initiatives is the MedAdap Tavira project, which promotes organic farming, connects biological and agroecological producers, encourages sustainable lifestyles and healthy diets rooted in the Mediterranean Diet, protects Mediterranean cultural landscapes, and supports the regenerative management of natural resources. The association also runs a Producer Network (Rede de Produtores) aimed at strengthening sustainable rural development, combating desertification, and enabling collective supply and distribution among small and medium-scale ecological producers.
Al-Bio regularly organises the Jornadas Técnicas de Agricultura Biológica do Algarve, a free, accessible training programme combining technical sessions and field visits to farms and production units throughout the region, such as Quinta do Freixo in Loulé and Quinta das Sesmarias da Corte in Tavira. These events bring together researchers, producers, and policy specialists to discuss topics such as circular economy, native species like the strawberry tree (medronheiro) and carob (alfarrobeira), and the potential creation of a Bio-Region in the Algarve.
The association is also actively engaged in defending regional agricultural infrastructure, such as the Centro de Experimentação Agrária de Tavira (CEAT), advocating for its continued operation and staffing as a pillar of regional agricultural innovation and Mediterranean Diet preservation.
Our Goal
Al-Bio promotes agroecology in the Algarve, connecting organic and agroecological producers to strengthen sustainable rural development, protect Mediterranean cultural landscapes, and foster healthy, sustainable diets based on the Mediterranean Diet principles.
Our Wishes
The association seeks new producers to join its network, participants for its training days and technical workshops, and professionals willing to support regional agricultural research centres such as CEAT.
