Colmeia – Cooperativa Integral da Terra is a non-profit food distribution network rooted in the Barlavento Algarvio and Sul Alentejano regions of Portugal. Operating from its warehouse in Colos, near Odemira, Colmeia runs an online shop and a network of collection points across Lagos, Vila do Bispo, Rogil, Monchique, Portimão, Colos/Odemira, Vila Nova de Milfontes, and Cercal do Alentejo. The cooperative distributes primarily organic food products — including grains, flours, legumes, oils, seeds, spices, beverages, and cleaning products — to both private consumers and local businesses. By consolidating purchases in larger quantities, Colmeia is able to offer lower prices and reduce packaging waste, making organic and sustainable choices more accessible. At the heart of Colmeia's mission is the idea that the project belongs to its members. Transparency around product origins and pricing, support for local producers and shops, and the reinforcement of a resilient regional food economy are central values. The cooperative operates as part of the broader GAIA Colos community hub network, which serves as a gathering point integrated into the local food web. Colmeia values local economic sovereignty: by keeping spending within the territory and promoting regenerative agricultural practices, it helps ensure that the wealth generated by food systems remains in the hands of local communities. The more regular purchasing that flows through the network, the greater the variety and quality of products Colmeia can offer, while simultaneously creating fair employment opportunities in the region. Colmeia operates on a cooperative model, encouraging members and consumers to rethink their consumption habits and become part of a meaningful alternative to mainstream food supply chains.
