Tapada de Coelheiros is a historic family estate in Arraiolos, Alentejo, with records dating back to 1467 and wine production since 1991. Spanning nearly 800 hectares, the property is anchored by 650 hectares of montado (cork oak and holm oak woodland), which the estate considers the heart of its regenerative model, supporting carbon sequestration, biodiversity and a multi-layered agricultural mosaic. The estate practises regenerative and organic viticulture across 38 parcels, minimising technological intervention in the winery in favour of manual work, parcel-specific vinification and extended barrel and bottle ageing. Beyond wine, Coelheiros manages a flock of over 1,300 sheep for grazing and natural soil fertilisation, an olive grove of around 60-year-old trees, pine groves, walnut orchards, and organic beehives producing a small, artisanal honey harvest. Shelters and perches for birds of prey, small birds and bats are installed throughout the property to encourage natural pest control, while a photovoltaic plant powers autonomous systems such as solar-fed animal water troughs. Granite-based soils, gentle slopes and a network of streams create favourable microclimates for the estate's vineyards, olive grove and surrounding woodlands. Coelheiros offers wine tourism experiences, including classic and terroir wine tastings, walnut tastings, jeep tours of the estate, and seasonal harvest experiences, welcoming visitors to Arraiolos to explore its landscape and production methods first-hand. The estate combines centuries of heritage with a strong contemporary commitment to sustainability, positioning nature and biodiversity as central to both its winemaking philosophy and its broader land stewardship.
