Fruta Feia CRL

Fruta Feia CRL is a pioneering Portuguese cooperative founded on 18 November 2013 with a bold premise: appearance should never determine a product's worth. The cooperative tackles food waste by creating a dedicated market for fruits and vegetables that are rejected from conventional retail channels solely due to their cosmetic imperfections, despite being fully nutritious and edible. Operating on a membership-based basket system, consumers register to collect their weekly share of rescued produce at one of 21 delivery points — 15 in the Lisbon region and 6 in the Porto region, including municipalities such as Almada, Amadora, Cascais, Gaia, and Matosinhos. The cooperative works directly with over 404 producers who would otherwise have to discard tonnes of perfectly good food. The environmental impact of Fruta Feia's work is significant and meticulously tracked. To date, the cooperative has prevented 8,190 tonnes of food waste, saving approximately 8,987,200 m³ of water, preserving 194 hectares of soil, conserving nearly 11,742,000 kWh of energy, and avoiding 7,289 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent greenhouse gas emissions — all figures directly tied to food that was rescued rather than wasted. Beyond logistics, Fruta Feia builds community through campaigns such as 'Beautiful People Eat Ugly Fruit' and 'Beautiful People Produce Ugly Fruit', which celebrate the human stories of both consumers and farmers. The cooperative also regularly calls for volunteers to help assemble baskets and is transparent about its operations, finances, and environmental data. With growing demand, Fruta Feia continues to expand its network and is actively recruiting new team members and volunteers to support its mission.
