AJAP calls for fairer farmer pay at Beja irrigation congress
At the XI National Irrigation and Drainage Congress in Beja, AJAP director-general Firmino Cordeiro called for better pay for farmers and improved conditions to attract young people to agriculture. Speaking in a debate on generational renewal, he proposed that the price paid to farmers be printed on product labels to increase transparency. Discussion also highlighted that only 11% of PDR and PEPAC-supported projects in the Alentejo involve young farmers, with Beja leading the region and olive growing the dominant activity. Cordeiro urged greater political weight for agriculture and access to Cohesion funds.
