Alenquer assembly votes unanimously against biomethane plant

Alenquer's Municipal Assembly unanimously declared a proposed biomethane plant in Marés to be of no municipal interest, backing motions from CDU, PSD/CDS-PP/IL and PS against the project. Councillors cite its scale, proximity to homes, heavy traffic from transporting raw materials, odours and possible soil and water contamination. The 20.5 million euro project by Gás da Terra, awaiting environmental licensing until mid-2027, would process 84,000 tonnes of waste yearly. The mayor said developers cannot guarantee no bad odours. A public consultation, extended by residents' request, runs until 29 September, with 389 submissions so far, including an unfavourable one from Quercus.
