Braval defends landfill expansion in Póvoa de Lanhoso against ZERO criticism

Waste management company Braval has called the expansion of its Póvoa de Lanhoso landfill, in Braga district, "essential and unavoidable" to keep serving six municipalities, responding to criticism from environmental group ZERO. ZERO argues the project extends a waste disposal model it considers illegal and unsustainable, and says licensing should not proceed without prior treatment of organic waste. Braval says the new cell was already foreseen in the 1996 original project and denies dumping untreated waste, citing a decade-old mechanical and biological treatment system. A public consultation drew 19 submissions, 15 opposing the expansion and none in favour.
