ZERO opposes landfill expansion at Braga's BRAVAL site

Environmental association ZERO has opposed a public consultation project to expand and reengineer the BRAVAL landfill, which serves six municipalities around Braga. The plan would join two landfill cells and raise their height, adding capacity for roughly 678,000 tonnes of waste. ZERO argues this merely postpones the underlying problem, noting that 80% of the system's waste already ends up landfilled, with minimal organic recovery or recycling. It warns the project fails to show sufficient treatment capacity to meet a January 2026 ban on landfilling untreated biodegradable waste, and calls for mechanical-biological treatment, door-to-door collection and pay-as-you-throw pricing instead.
