Cinfães starts using GPS collars with audible alerts to keep cattle on permitted grazing land
Cattle in Cinfães, in the Montemuro uplands of Viseu district, are now tracked by GPS collars. About 100 animals wear them for now, and the aim is to reach every local herder. A collar sounds a warning if an animal strays outside the zone set in an app; animals were trained beforehand to turn back at the signal. The devices also record grazing time, which shows how much flammable vegetation has been cleared, and give real-time data on health, digestion and pregnancy. Sixteen antennas will cover the municipality, bought and maintained by the council and the Baldios association.
