Évora researchers test 10 carob varieties for Alentejo's frost and climate

Topicsprecision agriculturenative plant conservation

Researchers at the University of Évora are trialling ten Portuguese carob varieties in an experimental field in the municipality of Évora, under the ALCAROB project, to see which suit Alentejo conditions. Carob is traditionally associated with the Algarve. Early results from a doctoral thesis funded by the national science foundation show the varieties react differently to cold and frost, with some highly tolerant. The aim is to give a scientific basis for future orchards. Spin-off Microplant has also developed laboratory cloning of male carob genotypes, usable as rootstocks and as pollen sources, and is working on cloning female plants.
