Ílhavo installs 30 new bins for used cooking oil

Topicswaste stream recovery

The municipality of Ílhavo, in partnership with PRIO, has installed 30 new collection points for used cooking oil, operated by certified partner EC3R, which sends the waste to PRIO's New Energies Complex at the Port of Aveiro. The scheme targets a council with strong maritime, catering and food-industry activity; 1,316 kg were collected during the last Bacalhau Festival alone. PRIO data show a litre of used oil can contaminate up to a million litres of water, while 1,000 litres can yield about 950 litres of biodiesel, though only around 10% of used oil is currently recycled. Ílhavo's municipal fleet already runs on ECO Diesel containing 15% biofuel from used oil.
