LIPOR recycling rises 2.8% in first half of 2026

LIPOR, the waste management body serving several municipalities in the Porto area, received about 35,219 tonnes of materials for multi-material recycling in the first half of 2026, up 2.8% year on year. Packaging, paper and cardboard grew, while glass and biowaste collection fell slightly. Overall urban waste production by residents rose 1.9%, with 185,768 tonnes sent for energy recovery, generating 81,483 MWh of electricity, and only 4,357 tonnes landfilled. LIPOR says citizen collaboration remains essential and calls for better sorting quality and greater involvement from residents who do not yet recycle consistently.
