LIPOR turns 25,000 tonnes of organic waste into fertiliser

LIPOR treated around 25,000 tonnes of organic waste in the first half of 2026, producing roughly 5,000 tonnes of Nutrimais, an organic soil conditioner. The waste management entity says valorising bio-waste can help reduce Portugal's reliance on imported fertilisers, citing rising urea prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and energy-dependent fertiliser production. LIPOR argues such products improve soil fertility and water retention while cutting the need for mineral fertilisers, with users reportedly reporting better crop yields.
