Portimão hands out free food-waste bins door to door

Topicsorganic waste treatment

EMARP, Portimão's municipal water and waste company, is running a door-to-door campaign from 19 to 31 October to distribute free kits for separating organic waste at home, including a 7-litre brown bin for food scraps. This is the second phase of the initiative, following a first round in May, and targets residents who have not yet received a kit. People can pre-register by 15 October to make contact and delivery easier, addressing a problem from the first phase where teams struggled to find residents at home. The campaign is part of a wider EMARP strategy since 2022 to boost separate collection of biowaste and cut the amount sent to landfill.
