Madeira named GigaSite champion at EU Water Academy

Regional President Miguel Albuquerque was honoured in Brussels as Madeira was recognised as one of the first "Champions" of the European Water Academy 2026, an initiative of the EU's Water Resilience Strategy. Madeira was named the first GigaSite under the EU's Wastewater Sentinel System, reflecting its integrated island approach linking water resilience, environmental intelligence, public health, digital innovation and citizen participation. Albuquerque described the region as a "living laboratory" for testing and developing practical solutions in these areas.
