Mota-Engil to build five biomethane plants by 2026

Mota-Engil Ambiente e Energia will build five renewable biomethane plants in Coimbra, Aveiro, Leiria, Seixal and Amadora, due to start operating by the end of 2026 with combined capacity of up to 170 GWh a year. The €25 million project, backed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan and Crédito Agrícola, will process around 600,000 tonnes of biodegradable urban waste annually, converting biogas into biomethane for injection into the national gas grid. It marks Portugal's first large-scale biomethane injection and is expected to avoid roughly 50,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year. A second wave of five plants is planned for 2027-2030.
