Offshore site near Figueira da Foz could store 93 million tonnes of CO₂
University of Évora studies, carried out with Galp and Lisbon's Instituto de Ciências Sociais under the PilotSTRATEGY project, identify a sandstone reservoir about 22 km off Figueira da Foz, 1,200 metres below sea level, capable of storing at least 93 million tonnes of CO₂. A pilot project, costing an estimated 90-120 million euros, would inject under 100,000 tonnes for scientific rather than commercial purposes, using CO₂ captured at the Souselas cement plant and transported by rail and ship. Seismic surveys are planned for 2027-2028, drilling in 2030, and experimental injection in 2031-2032, with monitoring until at least 2034, depending on funding and approvals.
