Portugal to widen carbon market to new forestry projects

Portugal's Voluntary Carbon Market is set to expand its methodological framework to cover new forestry project types, including reforestation and improved forest management, environment minister Maria da Graça Carvalho announced. She spoke at a conference on the Iberian forest and voluntary carbon markets in Lisbon, held during EU Green Week. Carvalho said approval of the new methodologies is expected soon, and that the government also wants to extend the market beyond forestry into blue carbon, marine ecosystems and nature credits linked to biodiversity restoration. She stressed the need for caution, clear rules on additionality, and long-term investment thinking.
