Ozone levels breach population warning threshold near Lisbon

Environmental group Zero warned that ozone pollution exceeded the 180 microgram per cubic metre warning threshold at two monitoring stations in Alfragide and Reboleira, in the Amadora area, amid a heatwave. The Lisbon and Tagus Valley regional coordination commission confirmed a peak of 193 µg/m3 at Reboleira on Thursday afternoon. Zero says the heat, strong sunlight and stable, dry weather forecast for coming days, especially the weekend, make further ozone build-up likely. It is urging authorities to warn the public promptly, including via emergency SMS alerts, since exposure can worsen respiratory problems, particularly in children, the elderly and people with lung conditions.
