Porto and Matosinhos plan €8.9m clean-up of Riguinha stream

The municipalities of Porto and Matosinhos, together with port authority APDL, are preparing an €8.9 million project to rehabilitate the Riguinha stream by 2028. The waterway, which flows mostly through Matosinhos before reaching the sea near the border with Porto, has long been blamed for degrading bathing water quality at Internacional and Matosinhos beaches due to illegal sewage connections. The plan involves extending the discharge canal by about 650 metres to divert polluted water away from the bathing zone. Costs will be split 50% Matosinhos, 25% Porto and 25% APDL, with Porto's council due to vote on the protocol next Tuesday.
