Porto launches free public transport for city residents

From 10 July, public transport is free for residents of Porto holding the Cartão Porto, under a scheme announced by mayor Pedro Duarte, fulfilling an electoral pledge. Eligibility covers those with tax residence in Porto or students living in the city. Existing free-pass holders under 23 need do nothing, while other cardholders must update their card at an Andante or Payshop outlet. New applicants can request the card online or at the Gabinete do Munícipe. The council approved the measure in April, budgeting up to €18.7 million for 2027, expecting around 59,381 users, about 23.5% of Porto's estimated population.
