Lisbon Metro to pilot 5:30am opening from October

Lisbon's Metro operator will launch a pilot project in October testing an earlier opening time of around 5:30am, with a possible permanent change from January 2027. Environmental association ZERO welcomed the move, which follows a proposal it made in March highlighting that the current 6:30am opening leaves early-shift workers in healthcare, cleaning, logistics and other essential sectors without a fast, reliable public transport option. ZERO says the change would also help cut car dependency, emissions and congestion, and improve links with early rail, river and road arrivals. It called for the pilot to be backed by transparent data on demand, costs and passenger satisfaction.
