Portugal ranks third in Europe for hydrogen valley projects

Portugal has the third-highest number of hydrogen valleys in Europe, with six projects identified by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, behind Germany (19) and Spain (12). Four of the six are wholly or partly based in Sines, reinforcing the port's role as Portugal's hub for green hydrogen production and export. The report describes a broader European trend of delays and stalled projects following the 2022 hype peak, driven by regulatory uncertainty, higher-than-expected costs and difficulty securing binding offtake contracts. Europe still accounts for about 91% of the world's registered hydrogen valleys, with 37% of projects having reached final investment decisions.
