Regenerative design duo builds education hub near Tomar

Ekōgaio, founded by Bruno Nunes and Géraldine Lepoittevin, works on regenerative landscape design, education and consultancy from a hub near Tomar, combining permaculture, agroforestry and water management. The pair originally planned a trip across Africa, but the pandemic redirected their energy into building the project instead. Their best-known work is in Crato, Alentejo, where they have planted over 10,000 trees on 40 hectares of municipal land over four years, working with volunteers, the University of Évora and the Waking Life festival after the land had been at risk of being lost. Five couples now live there as guardians.
