Ekogaio (stylised EKŌGAIO) is a Portuguese agro-regenerative collective founded in 2020 and based in Tomar, Santarém. Their mission is to facilitate the design and implementation of holistic, regenerative landscape projects that restore biodiversity, improve water cycles, and create abundant edible systems. Working across the country — from the Algarve to the Norte region — Ekogaio has been involved in a wide range of projects including homesteads, farms, educational centres, community spaces, and municipal land.
Their services encompass consultation and land analysis, permaculture and agro-regenerative design, full implementation and site management, and educational events including workshops, internships, seminars, and courses. These services are offered to individuals, farmers, associations, and local authorities alike.
Their project portfolio highlights the breadth of their work: the Herdade da Saudade in Alentejo (330 ha) integrates holistic farming, ecological tourism, and farm-to-plate food production; the AME cultural space in Baixo Alentejo (18 ha) combines land regeneration with agroforestry, timber production, and pedagogical events; and the Waking Life festival site in Alto Alentejo (40 ha) incorporates Mediterranean orchards, water management, windbreaks, and permaculture workshops. They also collaborated with the Municipality of Crato on a 28 ha agro-regenerative design project.
Smaller-scale projects include Casa do Sol in Ponte de Lima, featuring food forests and rainwater harvesting; Terra Kasuria in Tavira, with rewilding, keyline design, and agroforestry systems; and community projects like Paraiso Tipu Tipu in the Algarve, featuring syntropic agroforestry.
Ekogaio's work is characterised by a multi-disciplinary approach addressing the ecological, economic, social, and cultural dimensions of landscape restoration, transforming arid and degraded land into thriving, biodiverse food forests.
Our Goal
Ekogaio aims to design and implement holistic, regenerative landscape projects that restore biodiversity, improve water cycles, and create abundant edible systems across Portugal.
Our Wishes
Ekogaio welcomes collaboration with individuals, farmers, associations, municipalities, and communities seeking to regenerate their land and build resilient food systems.
